Chapter 11

COMMUNITY ENERGY REDUCTION

Reducing energy used in a community is of course just as important as establishing new ways of generating it. Energy reduction projects are a good thing to do, not just because they reduce the amount of energy being used, but because they can also bring significant financial benefits to a community – particularly to people who are in fuel poverty and have problems heating their homes – and provide a focus for community activities.

Community energy reduction projects typically involve at least one of three activities:

Energy advice and home energy audits – performing a study of the amount of energy people in your community are using and offering free advice on measures householders can take.

Insulation and retrofit programmes – ranging from improving the insulation of a single community building to carrying out a street-by-street home insulation project.

Behaviour change – changing the way people in your community think about how they use energy (and hopefully, start to use less).
